I organize a softball tournament for fund raising with all proceeds given to Pittsburgh Children's Hospital. Our tournament this year raised almost $8,500 in only our second year and first for charity. This is a little short of the original $10,000 goal, but still an amazing amount of money considering only 60 players participated.
A dear friend's eight year old son was recently diagnosed with Anaplastic Astrocytoma, a grade III brain tumor. My friend's son, Christian, really enjoyed the visiting pets, art and music classes during his stay for surgeries and treatments. For this reason I have asked for all donations to be specifically set aside for the Child Life Services department, who provide all the "extra fun" for the children.
The tournament is a little different than most. You sign up as an individual and get "drafted" onto a team that you play with all weekend. You may be playing with guys that you have never met or have competed against for years. You also get to play against your regular teammates. It creates a fun atmosphere and takes the pressure off of winning a game.
I did a presentation before the championship game and introduced the guys to my friend, Christian Connelly. I thought that it was important to show them to see the reason why we were playing that weekend and that there are more important things in life than how far you can hit a ball. It was amazing to see a bunch of tough, grown men completely break down and cry.
We had a write-up in the local paper. http://www.yourplum.com/plumadvanceleader/article/plum-field-hosts-softball-tournament-special-purpose
